Streetlight Isolation Transformers
Affordable Streetlight
Safety
Bridgeport Magnetics Group, Inc. has
developed the following products in close cooperation with a large
electrical utility company.
So far, thousands of units have been installed. More are in the
process of being installed throughout New York City.
Con Edison
and the New York City Department of Transportation have
established a partnership to increase the safety of metal pole
streetlights in New York
City,
by installing Medical Grade Isolation transformers in the pole
bases. The transformers will improve public safety by
eliminating possible electric shocks caused by faulty insulation or
wear and tear on the insulation of components and wiring.
Streetlight Isolation Transformers are now being offered to other power
utilities and other companies that are active in construction and power
distribution.
How it Works
Toroidal isolation transformers are designed to eliminate
contact voltage and stray voltage conditions existing in
streetlights, traffic lights, kiosks, and other line powered
items in the urban streetscape. This type of installation is
often subject to accidents and interference from the public,
which may damage the insulation of electrical components.
Product Specifications
The Streetlight Isolation transformer consists of a primary winding, which is connected
to the power line and a secondary winding, which power the
lighting fixture or other loads. Multiple layers of insulation
separate the windings and effectively isolate the load from the
line input related to the ground. The effect is to prevent any part of the load from
carrying voltage and present a danger to people and pets passing
by or touching the fixture.
Normally the input and output voltage are the same, e.g.
120V/120V. However, they are also available for different voltages.
e.g. 120V /240V if desired.

The transformers are designed for continuous use in up to 140
degrees F (60 degrees C) ambient temperature.
-
They are contained
in resin enclosures and potted in epoxy compound rendering them
waterproof for depth up to 5 ft.
Transformer Leads:
Overload Protection:
An internal auto resettable thermal switch is set to trip at
approximately / 221 degrees F (105 degrees C) to protect the
transformer against overload conditions.
Installation:
The bottom of the resin canister is embossed to identify
LINE/LOAD connections, unit power, voltage and frequency ratings
and the words “Streetlight Isolation Transformer". Waterproof
labels indicate the serial number.
Mounting is by means of a single bolt through a central 5/8''
diameter hole.
Safety Standards:
The Streetlight Isolation Transformer complies with:
UL60601-1, IEC606-1, and
CSA.
